According to health professionals and experts, RICE treatment or therapy is a simple methodology which when given to the injured patient (as a first aid) can help them relieve the pain to great extent.

This treatment method should be tried out as soon as possible without any delay for faster healing.

RICE” treatment method basically involves the four basic treatment methods for pain relief.

These are: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation

Rest: Taking quality rest is a best way to heal your minor injuries and pain. You thus need to take enough rest not only for the pain treatment but also to protect the injured area and soreness.

If required you should take a break (for 1-2 days) from your work or from the activity that is causing the pain or soreness.

Ice: Among the different therapies and medication there is a simple treatment available i.e. applying ice at the affected area.

Ice pack treatment or cold pack method helps in reducing the swelling as well as pain to great extent. You can try this for about 10-20 minutes for 3-4 times in a day as per your convenience and requirement.

This will help reduce the swelling significantly. If the injury is not severe you may get the relief in just 2 days. But if the pain persist you may need to try hot fomentation method.

Care that you do not apply ice or heat directly to the skin. Using a towel (or soft cloth) in between your skin and cold/heat pack is always recommended.

Compress: To compress or wrap the area which requires treatment is another part of this therapy. You can use an elastic bandage for wrapping the sore area which will eventually help to relieve the swelling. Care that you do not wrap the affected area too tight as it can cause severe swelling rather than decreasing it.

You can use this compression for about 2-3 days. Always consult your doctor before you plan to use it beyond that. Your doctor may recommend using it, if there is a need according to the seriousness of the problem.

Elevation: Elevating the injured or sore area can sometimes help and is thus recommended. You can do this by using a pillow or bed wedge under your neck and shoulder area.

Make sure that you keep the affected area at or above the heart level which will help in decreasing the swelling fast. You can also use an ice pack while you are laying in this condition for faster relief.
